“Cinematic Poetry” by India Clark (aka Yaya)

I am Gone with the wind, someone please tell me Which Way is Up?
I have met this Ironman who has me Sprung, now I’m running around like I’m on some Funny Farm,

I understand that I am this Pretty Woman, with eyes the color of Brown Sugar
But the way he made my Love Jones come down, has me feeling like Lady Sings The Blues,

He knows I’ve enjoyed having Sex…in the city, with a few Goodfellas…you know, The Usual Suspects
And he should know that I do not enjoy playing The Crying Game,

I dated a Leo before -haha – I called him The Lion King, but he had a bad habit of
Secrets and Lies, soon there became Six Degrees of Separation between us,
I got tired of Waiting to Exhale and decided to Do the Right Thing,

I boarded an Airplane that moved through The Air up There quite swiftly; when it landed I found myself Sleepless in Seattle, in my dreams I was Romancing the Stone
In A Room with a View, I began to remove my clothes and found myself Dirty Dancing,

When the evening fell, I walked and saw a woman, she was Singing…In The Rain
I asked her name, she said “Roxanne.” She was Barefoot in The Park, she told me she doesn’t wear shoes, she likes to feel the earth move under her feet; told me a story of how she used to work Sunset Boulevard and how her hard life gave her a Braveheart

She reminded me to cherish every breath and how this is A Wonderful Life. She said “Love, is a Many-Splendored Thing.” Now that is what I call…A Walk to Remember…

May Memorial Features Renowned Poet

MAY MEMORIAL HOSTS WORLD RENOWNED POET
SATURDAY, JULY 24 at 7 p.m.

“In a language that is at once searing and lyrical, Luz Maria Umpierre takes the reader to the depths of intense pain, humiliation, and constant struggle. These poems, so personal and heart-felt, are an act of courage that unmasks the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of unmitigated hate and violence.”  -Lourdes Torres University of Kentucky

“Revolutionary in form and content”   -Cheryl Clarke, poet and editor Conditions

“Umpierre uses the writing of poetry to claim her voice and speak her wholeness. Hers is the voice of a consummated poet who has learned to treasure the fruitfulness of pain and fragmentation.”   -Gladys M. Jimenez feminist historian and cultural critic

On Saturday, July 24th at 7 pm, May Memorial will proudly present poet, Luzma Umpierre. Ms. Umpierre was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico and was a resident of Syracuse from 1991 to 1998. She is a world renowned writer, educator, and human rights advocate. Author of seven published books, including The Margarita Poems; For Christine (written during her stay in Syracuse, NY) and Our Only Island—For Nemir.  Syracuse’s own Mic Tha Poet will be the opening poet.
